You may not have noticed but I have removed (hidden) the previous journal posts where I described in general detail my concept for a new business (slash) website. That was done on the advice of my mom who felt I shouldn’t discuss the idea publicly until I speak with a lawyer (or two) and take legal ownership of the idea. That is also why I have not mentioned it since. Still, I have resolved to transform that idea a working reality.

Though still in the infant stages (or, more accurately, the first trimester) of the process I have already been given a verbal promise of investment capital. Most of this concept is still nothing more than a thought in my own head, but I am currently going through the motions of getting through the unexpectedly overwhelming amounts of red tape that will give the concept a legitimate, real-world foundation. I consider myself a pretty smart guy, but when it comes to deciphering corporate tax regulations and potential business insurance liabilities I find myself a bit beyond my depth. I know that this is all necessary to the process, but for the most part I just want to start writing code.

Anyways, somewhere along the way I am going to need to give my site a name. Last night Lukas and I spent over an hour checking on the availability of various potential domain names, almost universally without success. It boggles (nay, it BLOWS) my mind to know that people are actually spending money to register any and all random letter combinations under the (assumed) belief that somebody else will pay money later on. Honestly, domain speculation makes the world a slightly worse place to live.

** Fun Game!! **
bobo.com is taken.
bobobo.com is taken.
bobobobo.com is taken.

Question: How many consecutive repetitions of “bo” do you need to use before you get to a .com domain name that is still available?

Hint: It is more than nine.

I could use your help here, friends. I need to find a cool domain name that is also still available. Have any ides??

You can look up domain availability here.

There are two potential categories. Either I can try to make a domain out of meaningful words or syllables (www.tvlounge.com) or I can use a nonsense collection of letters and try to turn it into a brand (www.zambo.com). I am open to either approach, though I have a few personal rules.

1. No hyphenated urls… unless it is really awesome.

2. No use of phrases that are already associated with other sites. For instance, anything with the word “tube” in it just sounds inherently derivative.

3. No bizarre alternate spellings that will just end up being confusing. (i.e. www.sup3rxtreme.com)

4. The shorter the better.

So far as the actual concept? Well, for those of you who don’t already know what the site will be and thus think you can’t help… hmmm… at the risk of saying too much… think social networking, think community, and think television. Trying to come up with descriptive names I have been rolling around the concepts of a universal remote control, a worldwide television lounge, a TV community, etc…

Just run with it.
