One more day until the action kicks off. Well, it kicks off for me anyway. For you it will probably feel like Wednesday.

With so many last minute thoughts racing through my head I am starting to feel the creeping shadow of self doubt. I haven’t typed a single word but I’m already turning hyper critical.

At least, I was.

Today I read through some NaNo-related forums and came across one particularly helpful thread that consisted of other would-be authors discussing their plot ideas.

Very little in this world is capable of providing a more effective confidence boost than discovering others even more pathetic than you.

I realize that it might be a bit petty and mean-spirited of me to criticize the creative impulses of other writers. But, honestly…

“…one of the things that struck me was finding a sealed submarine hatch in the middle of the ocean.”

“I’m all hot for superheroes lately, so I’m thinking of a She-Hulk-esque yarn about average people trying to get by in a city of superheroes.”

“I’ve been reading a lot of fantasy lately, so maybe i’ll go with some of that. No elves though damnit. “

“My steampunk tale is also going to involve some kind of giant airship. The usual zombies, neofeudal stuff with crazy rich guys filling for the old royalty, were-folk, vampires and so on, but with steam too!”

“The United States consists of what we consider New England. Maryland and Virginia are one nation, dependent almost entirely on trade as the means of capital. Further south, the Confederacy survives, with its government much closer to libertarianism… Behind this pretty picture, vampires run society.”

“this year, things are looking good. My only worry is that I’ll have to do Nano while still writing and running my biweekly D&D game and writing its story hour, but I think I can handle it… My plot takes place in an alternate dimension that works by standard cartoon rules, but it consists of multiple planets and has a more or less science fiction technology level (with some fantasy elements.) The story revolves a season of a reality show that parodies the real-life Amazing Race and is run by a dimension-wide television network. Things take a turn for the dangerous when the dimension is discovered by an extra-dimensional empire.”

Among the most intelligent posts encountered today was one actually written in reference to that particular NaNoWriMo forum itself.

“I think that place is crawling with furries.”

4 people care

  1. Did he mean Furies as in the cat-like fantasy demons or furries like soft and cuddly?

  2. good luck

  3. “Furries” as in “let’s all dress up in soft cotton animal costumes and have sex with each other!”
