I am not sure you realize just how gullible I am. Suffice to say my gullibility exists at many levels, with most of them high. It is sometimes funny to watch people try and convince me of something, even though I have already made up my mind one way or another. Usually I am persuaded within the first minute or two of conversation. If you don't manage to convince me within that brief window, you probably won't at all. All is not lost for you however, as once that window closes I may still be brought to your side. Even though I stop listening to what you have to say, my thoughts will usually stew over the argument and I will end up convincing MYSELF. All you really need is to plant that seed. On all but the rare occasions my warped thought process will do your work for you. Even though I may not visibly display any signs of faltering, there is really no need for you to beg or incessantly remind me of how cool I would be if only I listened. The point is: I already have, and you probably already won.
That in mind I stopped at EBX on the way home from work yesterday and bought X-Men: Legends for the Gamecube. It is actually kind of pathetic how these things come about. Offhandedly Vaswani asked me during work if I had heard of the game. To which I replied “Yeah, but I don't know much about it. Ask Lukas.” Conversation having ended I realize that I probably SHOULD know something about the game. An hour later I had read several reviews of the game and thought it looked pretty awesome. To confim my suspicions I asked lukas if the game in fact was sickeningly radical. He confirmed. At that point it was a lock that I would pick up the game before day's end. That of course didn't stop Lukas from trying to convince me to buy the game. It was a slow day and I didn't see any reason to waste an afternoon's worth of entertainment so I didnt tell him that I was actually already decided in my purchasing decision.
The only real problem that I had with the game is that Lukas has played it quite a bit before, and I haven't seen it at all. This is only really a problem because the game is designed to be multiplayer cooperative. If your coop buddy has already played through most of the game it becomes a lot less fun to play. Too many games have been ruined for me by people who 'went it alone' and played way ahead without me. I bought Return of the King but couldnt play it because my brother had already beat it by himself. When we went to play it together he would always say what was about to happen and what we would need to do. That isnt very much fun. I assumed X-men would be the same way. Assured by Lukas that it wouldn't, x-men was mine.
Too bad the fucking Yankees/Red Sox have to play baseball for goddamn 4 and half hours. By the time the baseball game was over it was getting pretty late and I had to get to sleep. Ah well, cyclops and gambit will have to wait until tomorrow. Naturally, Lukas doesnt have shit to do on wednesdays so he stayed up and played my game without me. His wednesday routine consists of sleeping and playing video games so I can only assume that once he wakes up he will get right back to the game. Cool fucking beans. It feels like I spent my money on a game exclusively for him to play. I really dont have any interest in playing the game single player, but I have even less interest in playing coop in the role of bitch to someone who already beat the game that same afternoon. Super Awesome.
It really blows to have someone ruin a game for you. I tried playing Knights of the Old Republic a while back, but as soon as I pop it in Lukas (who has already played through and finished the game) sits down next to me and watches over my shoulder. A bit annoying, but whatever. As soon as I level up for the first time he jumps in by telling me where to put my stat points and what I should be doing and lays out a plan for the leveling of my character to best deal with what is going to happen 10 hours into the game. I havent even touched KOTOR since that first level up. I tried playing Tales of Symphonia, and that went well for a few hours until Lukas asked to coop with my character. Fine, it might be fun. After the first battle he goes in and reassigns all my character controls, spells, attributes, party order, etc… As I walk around the dungeon he keeps saying 'ok, now go right, and now up, and push that block…' Again, I haven't played that game since. Back in the day I had been playing Final Fantasy VII for quite a while. It was a three disc game and I was nearing the end of disc one and having a blast. My brother realized how badass the game was and started playing as well. Too bad he played for days upon days without even giving me the opportunity to play the game I had bought. “You can watch me if you want.” No thanks. Within a few days he had finished the entire game and I was able to go back and continue on. Sadly, whenever it was my turn to play he would sit behind me and be like “No… give the item to that guy! God, you are only level 25?! I am level 47.” Fuck you, Eric. I quit that game almost immediately.
I have a feeling Xmen is going to be like this. Lukas will play all day by himself, and then play coop through the afternoon with his girlfriend. I will get home from work and be invited to join in with the two of them. Of course they will already be 6 hours into the game and I really won't want to play. Best 50 dollars ever spent.
Nobody Cares Yet.
