Matt whined to me tonight about how I haven’t updated in a while… so here’s something that just caught my eye while scanning CNN.com.
Alumna sues college because she hasn’t found a job
The headline alone caused an immediate reaction of, “that’s odd but maybe not so crazy.” As I was reading the story my reaction soon changed to, “nope… that’s definitely crazy.”
Trina Thompson, 27, of the Bronx, graduated from New York’s Monroe College in April with a bachelor of business administration degree in information technology.
This is the part where she lost me:
As Thompson sees it, any reasonable employer would pounce on an applicant with her academic credentials, which include a 2.7 grade-point average and a solid attendance record.
I have never heard of Monroe College and have no idea what a bachelor of business administration in information technology even means but I would lay 4 to 1 odds on any amount that you want to bet that at least one of the core classes centered around using Excel.
I don’t want to sound too dickish – although a certain amount of dickishness is definitely called for here – but I’m not sure that a ‘solid’ attendance record really qualifies anyone for much of anything. Although, if I were hiring someone I guess that might be more impressive to me than a 2.7 GPA.
She suggested that Monroe’s Office of Career Advancement shows preferential treatment to students with excellent grades. “They favor more toward students that got a 4.0.”
… so does literally everyone else in the entire rest of the whole world.
It sucks that she can’t get a job, but I know people with much higher GPAs who spent a lot more money to graduate from much better schools that can’t get jobs either right now.
But hey, good luck with your lawsuit.

haha i read that this morning thinking “2.7 gpa” and you expect the job offers to just come pouring in?

Glad to know that if you are “average” at a school that probably has lower standards than other 4 year degree programs, you have more trouble getting a job than …. say, a 25 year veteran of the IT industry with 3 kids / house / dog / spouse and the ability to do everything she learned (??) at school with his or her eyes closed and is willing to probably take the job at the same price as she is expecting….

Did it say in the article how long she has been looking for a job?

I wonder if this would make for a more compelling story if she hadn’t just graduated 3 months ago from a second tier school with a subpar GPA looking in a city flooded with more qualified candidates than her.
I think your dickishness is in line.
