I realize that this is poker related, but it blows my mind just enough to warrant a quick late-night post.

Phil Hellmuth had an interesting situation at his table. A player made it 3,000 to go preflop and another player was debating the call. After asking how many chips the original bettor had, Phil announced that he was still in the hand also.

“I’m all in, Mr. Hellmuth. I’m in awe. I may never have the chance again to play with the man who has the most bracelets. Don’t lay it down, Phil.”

After much thinking, Phil laid down his pocket queens. The original bettor called and showed {A-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds} while the man who wanted Phil to call showed {A-Spades}{A-Hearts}.

If you are playing in a tournament with Phil Hellmuth, clearly one of the greatest poker players of all time, why in the hell would you talk to him during a hand? It should be pretty obvious who has the edge in the conversation. People do this kind of thing all the time at the small stakes tables and it almost never works there (except against other noobs at least). So you would (meaining: I would) forget trying to win a mind game with a world class human observer.

The guy probably thought he was being really cool and tough, too.

Good game, idiot.

3 people care

  1. lol

  2. Who won the hand? Geez, what kind of commentator are you???

Trick answer, of course – Phil won the hand because he did not play.

“Strange game. The only winning move is not to play”.
