Yeah I'm not exactly sure where the FanTV thing will end up going. All I know is that it combines most of the things that I really enjoy / am passionate about -- programming, TV, fantasy sports, and the Internet.

Another pretty cool thing that could happen / should happen eventually is TV being watchable through a web browser. I don't mean to say that this can't be done now, because I know it can. I mean that it'll be cool when watching TV through your browser is something a majority of people can do easily.

Having TV embedded in the actual FanTV website would make it even easier for people to interact with each other while watching TV.

Hmm... that is actually kinda interesting. To be honest I like the idea of interactive tv more than the fantasy/betting aspect of it. I guess I have been a bit hung up on the concept of brackets and fantasy drafts whenever we talked about it.

One of my friends at northwestern used a 399 to build a television companion program that would scrape the Closed Caption subtitles and then parse the words to build a list of related information. Basically if you were watching the news, for instance, and there was a story about a fire in California the program would bring up links to related internet pages like a map of california, info about fires, etc. It was a real-time version of the bit in Starship Troopers where the television keeps asking, "Would you like to know more?"

I might have to give this a bit more thought...

Well yeah, the broad idea of "social networking" has been fine-tuned pretty nicely by facebook and myspace (kind of for myspace)...finding a niche and then applying a social network is kind of more along the lines of what I was talking about. Ideally I'd want to turn FanTV into a type of social network as well. Watching TV is generally a pretty social experience (I guess you could argue against that as well...but whatever). We've talked about this before, but adding live prop betting to the site, as well as the forums (there are several nice hacks out there for vB that add actual profile pages, etc to vB), live chat during shows, etc are examples.

Yeah, I had a few ideas of my own during my various CS-399s (independent studies). Unfortunately, I ended up working with a few highly unmotivated people and we ultimately built something really stupid.

Social networking has basically been done. There may be a few random features that facebook and myspace are lacking, but I can't think of anything all that significant.

Fantasy Reality TV.

haha...kidding...kinda.

At Northwestern I joined a Venture Challenge team with a couple of kids from a class. Our idea was a type of social networking site. I won't get into the details here, but we did spend a solid 4-6 months working on the idea, doing the research, presenting the idea to Venture capitalists, etc.

If you are interested in either thing (I know I've bugged you about FanTV a lot), let me know. I understand that there's a very good chance that neither of these things are viable options for you, but talking about them could help you figure out what some real viable options actually are...maybe?

My ultimate goal career-wise is also to create/run an internet-based company of my own. Obviously we're at somewhat different places in our career path right now, but talking with someone with the same goals/interests as you couldn't hurt.
