Early this morning I updated my website to the newest version of WordPress. Typically I do these upgrades without any kind of announcement, but the release of 2.5 has led to a few issues that are worth pointing out.
First, the upgrade has broken a number of my custom scripts. For instance, the list of recent comments in my sidenav has been lobotomized. Until I take the time to go in and hack apart the code again I am forced to use the default, super simple version of this script.
Oh well.
Second, and most importantly, the 2.5 release of WordPress includes built-in image support. One of my biggest unresolved issues with this site was that my gallery seemed very disjointed from everything else. It had a totally different look and feel and existed in a totally separate directory and database. (If you Google “LittleWyvern” you will get a link to my gallery… but not to my blog.) No more! I spent an obscene amount of time this afternoon fiddling around with the new image support, but I think that I am finally getting the hang of it.
Behold, the start of my new gallery.
This is just the beginning; as I learn more about the coding I will obviously extend and improve the gallery. For instance, each picture will eventually have comments (exactly the same as individual posts), but because the default gallery structure severely clashes with my current theme I have temporarily disabled all image comments. I just need to hack the gallery code a bit so hopefully I will have it working in the next day or two.

coppermine really wasn’t the answer… i never updated it afterwards cuz it was never integrated well. the widget we used on our wedding website works pretty well – so i was probably gonna start using that on my page.
how hard was it for you to integrate?

honestly, so far it has been a real bitch. Apparently they worked on 2.5 for six months and the improvements are obvious. Still, it was only released a few days ago and the bug reports are quickly flowing in. The problems that I am having seem to be occurring for others as well, which is somewhat comforting. I fully expect a patch to be released in the coming weeks and hopefully the process will be improved. For now I consider my gallery to merely be a jump start with the more complete solution coming as the 2.5 bugs get worked out.
