The NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship (NHUPC) begins today at Caesar’s. I will be going down there to watch the action, but before the tournament begins Matt and I threw in some money and filled out our brackets. I would offer to include some of you in the pool, but the brackets were drawn yesterday (thursday) and the tournament starts this morning at 10am so there wasn’t exactly time for anyone else to join in.
Just for fun you can take a look at the starting bracket. Fill it out for yourself and see how you do. I just did some simple copy/paste work in MS Paint.
If you see this post before 10am PST (noon chicago) feel free to send me your completed bracket and I will post it up as well. If you miss the noon deadline I suppose I could take it in good faith that you did not look up some first round results beforehand. You can’t win any money, but it might be fun just the same.
Once you have filled it out for yourself…
If you want to see how it will end up you can look at my complete bracket. I am making a seriously bold statement with my predicted winner. Unfortunately, he probably has one of the most difficult first round matches. If he makes it past round one, though, he’s gonna take it to the house.
Zurek’s bracket is also online.
Observations
- Somehow we both ended up independently picking the same guy to make the finals. And then both of us picked him to lose.
- My eventual winner and his eventual winner should meet up in the third round (according to both of our brackets). That could make for a pretty important match.
- Both of us picked Ted Forrest, last year’s winner, to lose his very first match.
I would say my bracket selections followed more of a “Go Big, Go Home” approach at bracketology. I favored internet players over tourney players and went with a few more unconventional picks. Zurek took the more reliable approach. I have a feeling that I am going to get killed.
Our points system will work like this…
Round of 64 win: 1 points
Round of 32 win: 2 points
Round of 16 win: 3 points
Quarter-Final win: 5 points
Semi-Final win: 7 points
Finals win: 10 points

I put up your bracket, too. You can be in for the money, but I expect you to pay up when Antonius takes it down.

After the first round I am in the lead, having correctly picked 20 of the 32 matches. Unfortunately, among the 12 that went wrong were two of my final four including my overall winner. Eric lost his winner as well but is holding close with 17. Unfortunately he has already lost three of his final four. Zurek’s winner is still alive, but he is currently in last place with 14. Tomorrow’s matches will make things interesting.

Round 2 goes to me as well. I won six matches for an additional 12 points, bringing my total to 32. Eric and Zurek each won five matches for ten points. Altstar stands at 27 while Zurezo holds close with 24.
All three of us have Gavin Smith so there is no chance for progress there. The bad news for Zurek is that his only possible chance is for TJ to continue winning. Altstar on the other hand needs Ted Forrest to win that same bracket. Because all the rest of their picks are dead, that is the only chance for either of them to gain any points.
I still have my diamonds bracket alive, though. Both Brad Booth and Scott Fischman are maintaining pace. If one or both of them wins their next match I should have this thing locked up.
